Not sure whether you have to file, what taxable gross weight means, or when it is due? Start with the plain-English guide, not the form.
Read the 2290 basicsHow it works
Four steps. The fourth one is the part most 2290 sites leave to you.
- 1
Tell us about the business
Business name, EIN and address. If you have filed with us before, this is already filled in.
Takes about a minute. You need an EIN. The IRS will not accept a Form 2290 filed under a Social Security number.
- 2
Add your vehicles
Enter each VIN and its taxable gross weight, or pull in vehicles you saved on a previous filing.
We calculate the tax for you, including month-of-first-use proration and the reduced logging rate.
- 3
Review and pay our fee
You see the exact Heavy Vehicle Use Tax and our service fee, itemised separately, before you pay anything.
Our fee is for preparing and filing. The HVUT itself goes to the IRS by the method you pick on the return.
- 4
We file it and send your Schedule 1
A preparer reviews the return, transmits it to the IRS through Modernized e-File, and your stamped Schedule 1 posts to your account as soon as the IRS accepts it.
You are not left to guess: the filing status in your account moves from queued to submitted to accepted.
We do not promise a delivery time we do not control. The IRS decides when a return is accepted. We promise the return is reviewed, transmitted, and tracked, and that your stamped Schedule 1 appears in your account the moment it is accepted.

Why file with Kay Accounting
Everyone in this market says fast, easy and secure. Here is what is actually different.
A person checks the return before it goes to the IRS
Most 2290 sites hand your form straight to the IRS and let the rejection come back to you. We do not transmit until a preparer has looked at the EIN, the VINs, the weight categories and the first-used month.
The tax math is done for you, including the awkward parts
Month-of-first-use proration, the 75% logging rate, and suspended vehicles under the mileage limit are all handled by the same calculator we file with, not a separate estimator that disagrees with the return.
Every return is checked against the IRS schema first
The return is validated against the IRS XSD before transmission, so structural errors are caught here rather than coming back as a rejection days later.
One flat fee per return, published in advance
A return is priced by how many vehicles are on it, from $14.95 for a single truck to $209.95 for a large fleet. The whole table is on the pricing page: there is no per-VIN charge and no upgrade prompt part-way through.
Your vehicles are saved for next year
VINs, nicknames and weight categories stay in your account, so next season’s filing starts from a list instead of a blank form.
Made a mistake on a VIN? Tell us.
VIN corrections are filed as a free-of-tax amendment. Email us the filing and the correct VIN and we handle the amended return.

Questions people ask before they file
What is Form 2290?
Form 2290 reports the federal Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). You file it for any highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The IRS stamps a Schedule 1 when the return is accepted, and most states will not renew your registration without it.
Do I have to file one?
If you registered, or are required to register, a highway motor vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more in your name, then yes. That includes trucks you expect to drive under the mileage limit. Those are reported as suspended vehicles rather than left off the return.
When is it due?
Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the month you first used the vehicle on public highways. For a truck already in service at the start of the tax period (1 July), that makes the deadline 31 August. Buy a truck in November and your return is due by 31 December.
What do I need before I start?
Your EIN, the exact business name registered to that EIN, your address, and for each truck the full VIN and its taxable gross weight. You also need to decide how you are paying the IRS: by direct debit from a bank account, or through your own EFTPS enrollment.
Can I file for more than one truck?
Yes. One return carries every vehicle and produces a single Schedule 1 listing all of them. The fee depends on how many are on it, from $44.99 for two to four vehicles up to $209.95 for twenty to forty-nine. A return on which every vehicle is suspended is $9.95. Above 49 vehicles we quote it individually.
How fast will I get my Schedule 1?
The IRS decides when a return is accepted, so we do not promise a clock time. What we do promise is that your return is reviewed and transmitted rather than sitting in a queue, and that the stamped Schedule 1 appears in your account the moment the IRS accepts it. Until then you can download a clearly-marked draft copy.
What if I get a VIN wrong?
Email us the filing and the correct VIN. A VIN correction is filed as a free-of-tax amendment to the original return and the IRS issues a corrected Schedule 1.
Is the HVUT included in your fee?
No, and nobody’s is. Our fee covers preparing, reviewing and e-filing the return. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax itself is paid to the IRS separately, by the method you choose on the return. Both amounts are shown to you before you pay anything.
Is my information safe?
The site runs over HTTPS, card details are handled by Stripe and never reach our servers, and return data goes to the IRS over an authenticated Modernized e-File channel. We do not sell your information.
Who actually files the return?
Kay Accounting LLC does, as an IRS-authorized e-file provider, under our own EFIN. You are not transmitting to the IRS yourself, which is why a preparer reviews every return before it goes.
Still unsure? Ask us before you file . A wrong EIN or VIN is much cheaper to fix now than after transmission.
